Definition - What does Basic Metabolic Panel mean?

A basic metabolic panel (BMP) is a series of blood tests that are carried out to evaluate the body's metabolism. The tests provide information on blood glucose levels, kidney function, and electrolyte and acid/base balance. It is usually conducted as part of an employee health assessment program that promotes employee wellness.

The basic metabolic panel testing is typically conducted during general health checks or on patients with pre-existing conditions like hypertension. In the hospital emergency room, these tests are performed to monitor any changes that can be indicative of serious health issues such as kidney failure or detecting serious diabetic complications.

If a health care practitioner requires more in-depth information on the patient's medical condition, they may request that a comprehensive metabolic panel be performed which comprises of 14 tests including those that are carried out in the basic metabolic panel.
